Concordia/By Sami Khalil

The migrant crises!

That same winter,

I had gardened faces when earth was strange,

Lacking Concordia and soft spots of the heart.

That same winter,

An Arcadian sun crossed our barb wired orchards,

Drowning the traces of refugees.

Who, in the quiet moments of apparitions,

When phantoms had lain in wait,

Lived not the daily verses of struggle or

The geography of unsettled borders?

Who remembers not?

Wars, incidents, accidents…Or the art of survival,

When life curiously lingers in death

And love is no more.

That hot summer,

I patterned names in hesitations,

Leaving the introduction of crimson voices to the dying legends.

That hot summer,

When those boats sank helplessly,

So much as our conjugated humanity.

Just as before!

This is beautiful. I get a sense of connectedness in the crisis that the subjects face. And the feeling that this could be any one of us. We are lucky to live within settled borders.

love the first three lines especially ... the tragedy of the Concordia in contrast to migrants is stark ..the opulence of that cruise ship and irresponsibility of its Captain especially is a fine image for hostile countries that watch people perish attempting to flee dangers ... i feel incredibly fortunate to be blessed living in the USA ... tho our problems are deep and complex these days ..it is a country sought after ... i wonder how long that will be the case :( your poem tugs empathy ... we all need to work hard for solutions to fleeing migrants ...

Beautifully captured Sami. I have read a few pieces on the European migrant crisis recently, and I always find myself saying the same thing. Weren't we all migrants at one time? Practically the whole of Scotland was made up of Irish Immigrants. Now we have all walks of life here, with generations preferring to call themselves Scots/(insert country of birth here) rather than (insert country of birth here)/Scots.
Now all of a sudden free movement is illegal and we're meant to just stand by and watch. No. No matter where in the world you are from, it's a pretty safe bet that immigrants were the ones who built your country. We should help when we can, instead of treating human beings as a newsbite.
Superbly said Sami. Sorry for the party political broadcast.
