the plum tree

the plum tree

A Poem by Kara Emily Krantz

The plum tree blossomed
and she knew Spring
was here.

She was young
and therefore moved fluidly
from yesterday's winter to today's spring
like the ever-pleasing honey bee--
the flowers blend one into the next
(and she forgets)
the purpose of the journey.

But she is here now.

The plum tastes so sweet upon her tongue
and she is young
and there is music in the air.

She questions her looks - when she should realize
-she will never be more beautiful-;
dewy tears on milky skin and honeyed lips.

Joy is fleeting, but so are smiles
and they always seem to come back for more...

So maybe she's in luck.

The plum is soft and malleable
-so is her heart-
which makes her easy prey but she
is full of innocence
and so blissfully
she will be
broken.

There will be a journey and along the way she will forget
the sensation of the sweet plum
upon her tongue.

but she is here now.

so maybe

she's in luck.

Beautiful piece of work. Very atmospheric
I have a plum tree and though it looks bare just now soon it will be covered with blossom and then that fruit - so fresh, sweet and vibrant when you eat it straight from the tree.
And you convey a spirit of optimism despite the inevitable forgetting on the journey.

It is that age that can be likened to a ripe plum. Well stated symbolism and analogy.

What a wonderful coming of age poem - she may get lost a bit along the way but perhaps she will find that lovely plum once again. Great write - you are so talented. I always adore reading your work.

So bittersweet. Such a lovely metaphor, the blossoming tree innocent of its own beauty and what will follow.. sigh..

I enjoyed the sensual feast, could taste that sweet plum, see it, feel it, smell it. Gorgeous.

She questions her looks , when she should realize she will never be more beautiful . There will always be a curtain level of insecurity and this line acknowledges that . Enjoy your blossoming youth and look forward to the wisdome that comes with age. A very intesting view from a soon to be "older and wiser" young lady.

I get lost for words sometimes reading your work, the comparison to the plum and that of a sweet innocents girls first taste of love, so full of hope and happiness... This is absolutely a marvelous piece of work, now my tongue is tied.

I love cherry blossoms! the avatar drew me in. i also love plum trees too. but this poem i loved the most. it flowed so well i saw an image of a music note above my head, moving fludily through space. (i know, deep0

when you get the chance, cn you review "higher than a nymph?" my poem, it has a similar idea to your poem. talking about how here heart is friagile, and compare it to an image from a fantasy world.
