New Years Hush

New Years Hush

A Poem by Sarai T

"Happy New Year" resonates all around me yet I see no reason to be happy.
Another 365 days spinning on this chunk of rock has passed, Whoopee!
An old school-buddy stumbles over, sloshing his drink and slurring his words, cheering about all the things he won't do this year.
The jubilation is lost on me; I've never understood why people think every holiday is a valid excuse to get drunk and act like fools.
I step outside into the cold; falling snow dances upon my eyelashes as it drifts down, white-washing away the dirt, the poverty, and seemingly, for at least this moment in time, the pain this city seems shrouded in.
I can't fight the corners of my frown as they head northward, a smile now painted on my previously morose face.
Despite not being one for mass-jubilation, I find happiness out in the silence, staring off into the night sky watching stars on their blue-black tapestry. This is where I find my happiness.

I like it because it's truthful. You didn't coat anything, just writing down "the ugly truth" about the days. The words you used are honest, sober but at the same time poetic. It has an easy flow, it's simple but entertaining.
