Poetry Be Damned

Poetry Be Damned

A Poem by realmwriter

The phony, the fake, you made a mistake
Now it's all right there on the page

Your white canvas, covered in black
A brush stroke you can never take back

But with every crossed out line or misspelled word
You paint your canvas with the rare and the absurd

A misplaced stroke of a nervous brush becomes a sonnet in the pens hurried rush
Parchment takes hold to tell the untold and be the burnished voice of the bold

Does it have to look real to capture the zeal
Do the colors have to be bright to capture the dark from the light

Is the brush stroke so grand, as to take it's own stand
Can the pen declare a master piece painted without cease

But where on the page does such a tragedy occur
Does the brush stroke tell of absolutes and sure

Does the pen capture practiced scroll in flawed form
Does not the brush capture memory, fluid in its thought

Against the will of the painter the brush glides across the nude canvas
The pen across the blank page creates the world despite the anxious

When the painter listens to what the pen conveys, it's called art
If the writer listens to what the brush conveys it's lunacy apart

Yet should the pen break the rules, the brush will demand
The art will be created, the piece written, poetry be damned

Meh. You lost your rhythm in stanza #3 and it went crazy in stanza #4. That could not have been your intention, because a writer of poetry is courteous to his/her reader...a writer of poetry respects his/her reader by being mindful of how the poem reads in his/her head. You have fingers, yeah? Use them to count. Syllables. Unless you're doing stream-of-consciousness poetry (which is a genre you should not even ATTEMPT until you master freestyle) leave the unstructured poetry to the experts.

Lovely piece, good rhyme scheme and interesting point. Makes me think differently about writing through your use of comparison to art. Bravo

I really like this, the rhetorical element is amazing, it really shows just how rash we are and how we don't take enough time! I love it :)!

Thank you very much. I am very happy that you like it.
Auditory and visual arts are all forms of poetry, created to express an artist's view of the world they live in and how they fit into it. When I compose a music piece on my violin I approach it like I am writing poetry: I let the instrument do the bidding of the muse in whatever form it takes and what is left in the air (or on the page) is a reflection of what I have inside. Perhaps the greatest difference is in those who view or listen to the art we create; some respond better to colourful images, some to flowing words while others can only hear. The piece you have written says it all: it is all art.

When the muse takes you, the work just pours out. Even what we thought were mistakes can lead to something stunning.

Realmwriter, I believe that sometimes writing takes on a life and spirit of it's own. There's very little of us involved. I guess that is where the idea of the muses took shape. This was a very well written piece. Thank you for sharing it with us...:)

I believe in our art, with our pens we create beauty and light that although not visible as say on canvas is alive in the eye of the mind and unlike the canvas can float and change to the viewers wishes, excellent writing Realmwriter, very much alive in my mind :)
