Wicked Winds 3/ Tornado 2

Kelly’s 7th birthday

April 2003

rural, McAlester, Oklahoma

On 20 acres of wooded land

positioned atop, a foothill’s downward slope

a single wide trailer, full of 7 yr olds and family.

The party wrapping up, as the winds start to build

parents calling in a panic,

one hangs up as another beeps in.

3 tornadoes, spotted over downtown McAlester, moving north

moving...towards our home.

The rains have started,

blowing sideways, with a vengeance.

Wait! What is that? Hail?

The size of golf balls

covering our car, our lawn , our porch

The tin roof sounds weak under the pressure

If it gets any worse, we run to the slaughter house!

The winds continue to bang and rock our trailer.

Screaming children and panicked parents

with nowhere to hide

A glint of light reflects from the car window

the sun...

Is it over?

I believe it is.

Not our time to go, round two.

God, the sudden violence of these storms appalls...but is also utterly dramatic. But with children around it is a drama you do not want. Unforgettable moments. I am stunned how many encounters you have had. Is this unusual?!

Omg, you really have had some experiences. It had to be frightening to see what power of mother nature can entail, yet surviving it all. Amazing!
