An American Quilt

aka The Patchwork Quilt

This country's like a patchwork quilt

each patch was sewn with care

Its fabric's of the finest silk

the strongest in the ware

Each thread was sewn in firmly

and each stitch a hero made

then tied with knots securely

for a hope that would not fade

Each patch was made so different

yet everyone's the same

each one's a different size and shape

and each one has a name

In each patch there are patterns

each pattern has it's place

the texture's shapes and colors

are religion creed and race

Each patch has a foundation

each one was founded strong

they together formed a nation

and they sing a common song

Though others may be jealous

and try reducing it to gravel

they may clip a thread or two

this quilt will not unravel

written the days following

the tragedy of September 11th 2001

A amazing poem for 9-11. It made a nation become one for a time. So many good people lost for reasons of hate. I hope we remember the people lost. Not the new world create by hate and revenge. September 11, 2001 had become day where our world lost balance and too many good people. Thank you for sharing the powerful poem. I like the use of the quilt.

Went pheasant hunting,
Right after the 11th,
2001 people opened their fields that had always been
Closed.
Behold.
Was it thoughts that mended the broken into Beauty ?
No I think you are right , we are a quilt.

May we ever remember those lost in this horrific tragedy! Thank you for posting this again Rose as we must never forget. The words of how we are part of a patchwork quilt is so very appropriate. The edges do ravel with age, but may always be mended with love and commitment to make it whole again!
Lovely!!

this is a beautiful tribute to those lost, but also to every man and woman who makes up this country's population...we are all under one canopy, the sky...and we are all equally important to the tapestry of the quilt...

lovely piece...couple spots...first stanza "its" and fourth stanza did you mean "texture's"?

again, a lovely lovely poem, Rose.
