Barriers only Thought can See

Barriers only Thought can See

A Poem by Shayla Sayer

As long as there is darkness

She will dwell in the light

And as long as there is light

I will writhe in the darkness

Separated

By worlds too different to merge

My only wish was to love her

Hold her close and dear"

But I wasn’t guided by the god she worshipped

And her faith made her untouchable

Hers a type of holy

I just could not bear.

The rules she swore by discluded me

Her way of life so foreign

I couldn’t even grasp the concept

And therefore was shunned

By her family and friends.

Acceptance was all I ever wanted

For my love to be embraced, not abhorred

But our coupling was never meant to be.

As long as there are boundaries

She will lay on one side

Whilst I mourn the distance between us

Separated by barriers only thoughts can see

I lie alone.

She and I were never destined

To be any more than friends…

But see all that has been denied to me!

Even a mere friendship is too much to ask

For she’s led away by friends and family

And she doesn’t struggle

Never resists

Simply glances back with a smile

And gives me a little wave…

As much as I’d like to think

That maybe if I changed myself enough

To give the semblance of purity"

I know it’s a false hope

For we reside in separate worlds

As close as we’ll ever be

… Which is so very far, far apart.

Unrequited love is difficult enough...when the barrier is one of created morality instead of heartfeltness (is that a word?) all the worse. Great job- the title and subsequent line excellent.
