Walking with Daddy

Walking with Daddy

A Poem by SM Davis

I saw you for who you are
and hope became mine once again.
Everything that's beautiful in me
came from what you were back then.

You are much more than I could ever be.
I see only the best part of what was me.

For so long I felt that I would never be
anything but fear and deserved agony.

I thought you abandoned me when you died
for years when I thought of you I only cried

For every tear that fell from your beautiful eyes
a jar of love was filled by me to give when needs arise

You were so much more than she ever let me know
memories she let fade of you as I did grow
I was so angry at you for pain she said you caused
I know now I would have known the truth if only I'd paused

Pain to her I did cause I didn't leave you by choice
I left her thinking you would fare to find your own voice

I found my voice but would have traded it to have you back
for so many years I thought I caused you to get off track
I cut my skin and hated her for all the things she'd done
I know now that giving in means only that she's won

You were the best thing I have ever made
and the years I had with you I would never trade

I know you now and I can see so much of you in me
how you gave and how saught answers set you free
I've seen your art and read your words no one could curtail
and now I know why in my writing my words will never fail

My youngest child you are the best of me by far
always remember how we sang while driving in my car

I love you and I won't forget the the things you taught me
memories of you flood me now and I know that I am free.

I'll always love you Daddy!

Yep, made me cry. I'm a daddy, to three beautiful girls and this just hit home with me.

From personal experience I can tell you two things, without reservation.

Every father wants his daughter to see through all the hurt we cause, without meaning to. Men can be so careless with fragile things, sometimes. We don't mean to, honest. It sounds like you found him, after all.

"I'll always love you Daddy!"
Every father wants to hear those words come out of his daughter's mouth, more than anything in the entire world. You made it all worth it, no matter the cost. He's smiling and content, right this moment. I can feel it.

He's proud of you. Hell, now I'm proud of you too. Great job.

This is so sad, but written wonderfully. It's always heartwrenching to lose a parent, especially so young. I'm sorry for your loss, great write.
