Come Thou Near

Come Thou Near

A Poem by SM Davis
"

grieving the loss of a friend...

"

Come thou near oh Knight this night
bear thy gifts of solace for sorrow
mortal borrow cold with might
let not a shatter steal the morrow

Come thou near oh Knight to me
steadfast truth and comfort bring
let not the peregrin flight be free
a presence this mine heart shall sting

Come thou near oh Knight 'fore dawn
metallic retile these fears mine shake
warmth of heart thy vision shall spawn
come thou now near that this heart not break

Taking a medieval tone gives the gesture of grieving a hauntingly lengthier span of memory, as if one were mourning a big chunk of time re the human condition.

Particularly resonant are the lines "let not a shatter steal the morrow."

Elegantly elegiac.

There are times when nothing, nobody, can mend what's broken .. but there's that hope, that hand, that word, that comes from someone somewhere that loves you a little better than you were.

More than sad.

I can feel the grief in your words, but I can also feel an underlying hope in holding to the knight. This is a sad, yet provoking and beautiful piece.

Your friend would be truly honored to have this written about him. You are incredibly talented. Sorry for your loss.

This is truly poignant.
The archaic language gives the emotions a vast scale and universiality. I love the first line, it's just so beautiful...
Well done

He comes when he can. Your knight to sooth away the bad. There are only times when one will do. If it is a plea then it is the perfect one to piece together what is broken. At such times it cannot be resisted.
