Message from the Monsters

Message from the Monsters

A Poem by spence

Monsters are not adorned with horns
Nor bony thorns of teeth
They are not the savage beasts
That prowl upon the heath to feast
They’re not hiding underneath
Your bunks and beds
They don’t cause the buzz of fear in your head
Not the rush of angst aghast as you snatch your breath
In your chest
They don’t zoom about on twiggy brooms
They’re not waiting to consume you
When, as you sleep in your room,
You think they dwell in darkened shades
Waiting to appear when shadows merge to mage
Into dragon scaled
Ghostly veiled
Hairy,
Scary
Fairytales
Oh no….
For it is you Humans that seek
To cause people to bleed
By abusing a need
By refusing to feed
By not taking the lead
In creating
Obtaining
Welfare and peace
For every creature
That you cull and breed
Your main features are malice
And murder and greed
You Humans can render life hollow
You can take away all tomorrows
So you are the Monsters
Not we.

spence
I originally wanted this to be a poem for children, but felt it became a bit too serious for anyone younger than a teenager.

The last line of the poem served as a sucker punch.
