One Year

One Year

A Poem by Alexandra

Last summer consisted of beach days
& movie nights in your bedroom
With nothing but sheets to cover our bodies
Only green & brown mattered
Only you & I in the month of June

It's only when things got toxic
That I began to play mental games in my mind
I would count the seconds it would take for you to open the shower curtain & find me sprawled on the floor
Or how many movie titles I could read from your Criterion collection with tears in my eyes
It made the pain bearable as I saw you distancing further & further away
When late night Friday's listening to Pinegrove & making love
Turned into, " I'm hanging out with Emily, so maybe another time next week"

We didn't go to concerts anymore
No spontaneous trips to NY occurred anymore
& we couldn't figure out what to do anymore

This summer consists of lonely walks on E. 14th Street & movie nights in my bedroom
With nothing but sheets to cover my body
With only brown to matter in this lonesome month called June
