"At the Mountains of Forever"

"At the Mountains of Forever"

A Poem by Mark

At the mountains of forever, and the seas of evermore,
Lie dreams of future splendor, and tales of ancient lore.

While heroes battle dragons, with maidens by the way,
No one has a credit card, at least that's what they say.
Not kings, nor queens, nor wizards, have ever seen a 401K,
Little elves and giant lizards have no mortgages to pay.
Bankers and brokers have no place, where fantasies abound,
Politicians just do not deserve to walk such hallowed ground.

Income taxes don't exist in the land of magic swords,
At the mountains of forever, and the seas of evermore.

Makes you think about the simplicity of things, yet we complicate everything. Excellent work. I love the imagery it gives me and the fantasy it makes me wish I were in.

Thanks very much Anna, this is one of my favorite pieces, I too love the imagery and fantasy!
We can`t live in this world - but we can retreat to it. Read Ursula le Guin - "Always Coming Home".
You have a good command of form and balance and I`m looking forward to seeing more of it. P.

Thanks very much,Pete.
I enjoy this idea, the sense that all these things that have become common place take away form freedom of thinking and imagination.

Thanks very much, I appreciate it!
A scathing comment of readers of fantasy or a wish for world free of real people with real lives?

Taxes do exist in fantasy world - they are just disguised (like ours often are). As are debts (credit cards), fortunes (401K), politicians (Kings and Queens).

There is a value in your premise. To compare the worlds of our dreams to the lives we lead and wish to escape. I'm just not sure you accomplish anything that connects the reader to the work other than cynicism (which most people have enough of, already)

romantic fantasy mixed with whimsy and humor. Truly an orginal inspiring piece of work.

Bankers and brokers have no place, where fantasies abound,
Politicians just do not deserve to walk such hallowed ground.

how true!

Thanks much!
Love it man, I read alot of Tolkien's work growing up and instantly became a fantasy buff. Growing up believing in good and evil definitely made it easier to see how banks were simply greedy and evil, and that being good has nothing to do with money.

A good argument for why entertainment, imagination, and fantasy are both popular, and necessary!
I appreciate the couplet form chosen for this, also.
