My Bittersweet Escape

My Bittersweet Escape

A Poem by Laura Ann
"

Something for Language Arts class.

"
I lay down on my bed

and saw a beautiful dark sky.

I made a wonderful game

to leave all this behind.

No present existed,

just each of us, hand-in-hand.

The most incredible thing:

Sprinting across the sand.

What would it be like

to be free once again?

At night... I dreamed.

A wonderful escape.

A rather abrupt ending, but we were only allowed to have a certain number of lines.

We're doing a Holocaust unit in Language Arts, and we recently watched a movie called "One Survivor Remembers", about a woman named Gerda Weissmann who survived the Holocaust, but had nobody after it was over. We were assigned to do a blended poem, where you take one phrase that Gerda Weissmann said, and then write a phrase of your own, based on either:
-5 of your goals/dreams
-5 memories
-5 friends, or
-5 difficult times.

The poem starts with a phrase from Gerda, then me, and Gerda, etc. The bottom two lines are Gerda's, though.

This is a neat assignment, one you blended quite well. Very enjoyable work. I like the dream of freedom. Did you feel like you were channeling Gerda?
