Absinthe Fairy

Absinthe Fairy

A Poem by John Stussy
"

Inspired by the picture, which is copyrighted to Vincent Cantillon Art.

"
A lofty crown
Of blue and green
Balances
'Twixt her horns,
Sporadic plumage
Shows its sheen,
A halo
For whom it adorns.

But this is no angel that I see,
Nor saintly sinner smiling.
This is a goddess, demanding praise,
Manifest poison to which I am slave!
Her silken hair tumbles in a stark cascade,
The ebony and blood from which her soul is made.

I hear her chant
Behind her mask,
A curse to
Cause my suff'ring.
She gives to me
A murky flask,
My darkest dreams
All held within.

Her one command to me is to drink,
Though I gaze upon her living ink.
The monsters that coil around her arm
Whisper the promise of beautiful harm.
They call to my demons, wanting to play,
I'll obey and forsake the warm light of day.

A sugar cube
Disintigrates
Just like my soul
As I start to fade.
Down my throat goes her sweet liquor,
And I shall be sane nevermore.

I like how this glorifies and squarely confronts human's masochistic tendencies and strange inability to resist a tragic entrancement that is love. The second stanza seems vital to me because it makes it clear that what becomes evil about the way this woman affects you is not her good or evil nature, but the power over you which she holds... and is fully aware of that fact. Nice blatant tie in to the picture with the monsters around her arm:)

Speechless, and that never happens! Just splendid in it's delivery, I'm awe struck.

I've heard rumors about absinthe. What is it? Toxic, or something?

I read this last week and I remember thinking: What can I possibly say to articulate how much I love this amazing piece of work...? So...I merely read and said...nothing. But now that you tell me you and *sigh* Bjorn ;-) are putting it to music...I came again and...I hope you accept my earlier silence as reverence, friend, because that is what it was. Not many do it like you do it, and there are a lot of us who...appreciate your gift. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Very cool poem and an interesting way of doing it! I love it. There is one little ity bity part that fell flat as I was reading this aloud. It could be that it would have worked great, if the rest of the poem wasn't so wonderful, but I think because all of the other parts were so strong and vivid:
"A darkened flask,
My nightmares
All held within."- sounded slightly off to me. Of course it could just be me that thinks so. I just like to share the tiniest things that I notice in case it helps the writer accomplish the most of what they set out to do.

Love, love, love these two lines:
" The monsters that coil around her arm
Whisper the promise of beautiful harm."

and the last stanza is out of control. Meaning that it is mesmerizing and awesome! I LOVE the line with the single word: "disintegrates".

Wonderful work! I enjoyed this immensely!

That was wickedly intense... some women can certainly suck the soul right out of you. Nice job.
