Blisters

Blisters

A Poem by Swagato Saha

The Eternal City basked in glory, 'neath a spangled sky,
Unwitting to dire designs, of timid traitors, treading by;
The Flames of Fury were foetal still, smouldered and scathed,
Menacing to erupt, as the City of Life, inched towards Death.

"Years have passed, and decades have rolled,"

Through the vales of dire darkness, they slid, aboard dark mares,
And forth they surged, swords raised, in frenzied blood-lusty flares.
They slaughtered, abused, they skewered,and slew, as the iron bells tolled,
While the Fatal Flames, now dazzled ablaze; so the final hours rolled.

"Fading into centuries of misery untold,"

Citadels crumbled, and bridges burned, while they whispered their prayers,
Distraught, the Heavens looked down, helpless to their teary stares.
Scurrying about,priests paupers alike,they slammed and clawed the royal walls,
To be devoured, by the Fateful Flames, as they succumbed to their Final Fall.

"The fire was doused, and the flames are long gone,"

Whilst, trembling he lurked, in the Shrine of Fallen Heroes,
Supine to cold cries of a million slaughtered souls;
Fingers nimble played on strings, tunes ominous and hollow,
Amid smothered screams, " Your city's burning Nero!"

"Yet the bloodstained ashes, of apathy, live on..."
