From Stranger's Eyes I See

From Stranger's Eyes I See

A Chapter by Norma M Sutton

Across the blue blue skies I gaze
From a strangers eyes I see
Feel the cold upon his face
Feel his heart in my chest race

Grip a rope
Shoulder a gun
Watch another friend sucumb
Another day of work is done

White masked faces
Swim into view
Visions I see from you
Distant urgent voices speak

Escape is all that you seek
Into my mind you safely come
Setting my memories a hum
Dark eyed family hair of red

More and more of you is shed
Reaching out in respite
You hold tightly to my sight
Watch the visions in my head

Double visions that we see
Greatly trouble thee and me
Until at last you lift your head
From confines of your bed

On a plane returning home
Dead and living together flown
Sadness wraps you like a veil
Slow and sure you tell your tale

Full of tears and horrid sights
And yet for me you did fight
Slowly you leave for your home
Leaving me again alone

Wondering why had you come
Just when I needed one
My troubles dimmed in your need
And to you I feed

Memories and visions light
Painting over your horrid sights
Wondering forever one
If my time with you is done

Being the spouse of a soldier has got to be a constant heartache, not only missing them but worrying bout getting the dreadful phone call... you certainly took us into the eyes and heart of what it must be like to be one.

A fine poem of homage to our brave sons and daughters. When will we ever learn?

"Day is done...gone the sun..." Taps is a sad tune no matter where it is played. This was a very nice tribute.

I stood and saluted many Boots, Helmets and m-16 in my time in the Army. I went to friends funerals after I got out. No words to describe the pain. Your story is a true one. Soldiers have great responsibility for what they did and wished they could of done. Last line is outstanding. Last week on Veteran day. I saw WW2 Veteran saluting missed friends almost seventy years later. A excellent poem.
