Food Brood

Food Brood

A Poem by Richard Williams
"

Active foods.

"

The jelly was “jammin” along with the corn,
and the cheese was playing a very “longhorn.”
The soda sparkled to the musical pops,
while the beer like to dance at the various hops.
The butter was very impressed with the spread,
but tomatoes were blushing a deep shade of red.
The potatoes weren’t, because they were blind,
and coffee thought it to be quite a grind.
The steaks really had no reason to beef,
but onions did cause many tears of grief.
Yet as the apples peeled until dawn,
Hollandaise sauce and the beet went on.
The meatloaf was idle, the olives were drab,
while Diet Rite Colas quickly ran up a Tab.
And Jack the Pancake made quite a big flap
by running away with the horseradish cap.
And all the grapes did was sit and “wine,”
with no hope of even “raisin” their vine.
Then along came bread whose smile was “rye,”
and sandwiched his way right next to the pie.
So the turkey was gobbled, and whiskey was drunk,
and the eggs did scramble since the Limburger stunk.
But worst of all, exclaimed the cold cuts,
poor peanut butter was only thought of as nuts!
