It Was A Sunrise Love...

It Was A Sunrise Love...

A Poem by Tessa Melendez

There was once a girl of fourteen...
Each day fighting with monsters that couldn’t be seen.
She often hopes that God could help her,
Often prayed for love and true laughter.
All she wanted was to write and live in NY,
Reading and writing stories day and night.
One day,
A boy came along.
Building a love with her that felt oh, so strong
It was a love that felt so gentle, smooth, and beautiful
Like the perfect rainbow of a sunrise.
But then, she came to realize...
The pretty girl that came before her had come into play.
And the girl saw her sunrise Love was not going to stay.
He was going to break her heart before she could have a say.

No, no, no.
This isn’t how it’s supposed to be.
He had taught her how to kiss,
Showed her how amazing love could be.
She would not be dismissed,
Treated like a mistress,
NO!
She would tear his heart to pieces,
Break him down, tear him apart,
But if only she’d been smart from the start...
Head in the books,
Ignoring the looks,
But she had wanted to try,
Needed to try,
Even if Love made her cry and die inside,
At least she would have an idea what it was like.
She met with his friend and pressed kisses to his full, smirking lips.
Looked into those hazel eyes and knew what they missed.
But he was gone.
She knew this was wrong and so was he.
What would this all come to be?

He found out and as they talked it out,
He convinced her she was all wrong.
His feelings for the pretty girl were long gone.
He told her he loved her still.
“I want to ask you to marry me, Tess. But, you can’t legally accept that.”
They brought the sunrise love back from the black,
Because he had said he wanted to be her first and last.
And along came all the stolen kisses and hugs she would one day come to miss,
All the words that would forever ring in her ears,

Soon they would be things she feared.

Nine months of love ending in waterfalls of tears.
The rainbow sunrise, now an orange and blue fire of a sunset.

Three more years passed...
The girl moved onto three new people,
Never finding a real new keeper.
Cheated on, mistreated, all she wanted was someone to keep.
But, he was still there watching the monsters defeat her,
Watching the red cuts appear on her arms,
Watching the innocent smile disappear from her heart.

Finally, she comes to be healed some,
But their connection comes undone.
That pretty girl told her the truth he buried all along.
She became her friend and brought the lie to an end.
That boy was cheating the whole time,
Doing drugs to distract his mind from the huge lie.
He destroyed all of the memories she had cherished,
Memories that will never perish,
But will remain tainted in her mind until the end of her time.

This was once a perfect relationship.
The one she kept like a trophy on a mantle.
Now it was in pieces and burning slow like a candle.
How could he lie like this for years?
F**k that pretty girl and then kiss her without a flinch?
Cheating is a choice.
He had a voice.
He could have admitted it and gone off with that pretty girl.
But the bullet was not bit.
The bullet was dodged,
Now in her bruised and scarred heart it was lodged.
And whatever is left of her is glad he is gone.

Too many good memories have been tainted of late
Too many people I’ve come to hate
I want to move on but the pictures will never be gone.

A poem and a story both. You did a great job with this. So many just want true love. So many only want games. Time heals all things and the best things come to those who wait.
