Firecracker

Firecracker

A Poem by duff

West Texas and it’s Fourth of July

Scorpion roadkill baking in the sun

A Marlboro Red recollection crime

Little girl became darlin' for his fun

Silhouette standing in the doorway

Long sleeves and triple digit heat

Busted up lip split like the highway

Chasing dragons at the age of 16

Bus stop bought a ticket to Austin

Boogeyman here turn out the light

A tumbleweed blowing in the wind

Loaded .45 killed daddy that night

Well this is short and to the point and covering so much ground in between. I'm sure you could work on this and submit it for micro fiction. Just enough spaces for the reader to fill in their own gaps. I'm liking the harshness of this reality you have painted.

This reminds me of my own poem 'Silent W***e' it's on here somewhere -

Wow duff- this is some raw reality! Love how you vividly set a desperate stage from beginning to end- all senses lit like flame-"Scorpion roadkill baking in the sun...Busted up lip split like the highway"'. Little "darlin'" and "Boogeyman ..daddy". And in the end- the Loaded .45- "turn out the light". I've never been to West Texas, but I recognize the scene...Brilliant!

Hey duff! I can't imagine- no, I can -thanks to your excellent poem....
This strikes me as a true picture of aspects of Americana forgotten except in poems like this. No asking for explainations, just saying as it is. Excellent.

Will do as soon as I can.
This sent me images of road movies, with desert stops and sweat streaks under a blazing sun. Greyhounds, backwater, forgotten transport for the dispossessed, down-trodden, the poor and where things can happen and be left miles behind. Another thinking piece.
