Truth

Truth

A Poem by Shannon Miller

Dear girl:
Young and beautiful
Full of life and dreams
Your aspirations are pure
Sunlight, rainbows, joy
Love, kindness, peace
The world is opportunity
Your life is freedom
But there will come a day
Reality will hit you in the face
You'll wake up some day
And realize that real life
Is a b***h
She will try to bury you
In lies, pain, shame
Loneliness, depression, confusion
She will say you're not enough
Imperfect, ugly, useless
She will keep the Truth from you
What is the Truth?
The Truth, my love,
Is that you are beautiful
You are strong
Full of potential
Real life will hide
Your dreams and your ability
To go where you want
Look past her
Keep dreaming
Learn to love who you are
Your uniqueness
Your grace
Your passion
Your quirks
The things about you
That make others uncomfortable
Because they don't know
Their own worth
So they can't see yours
Remember who you are
And what you want
And the world won't stand a chance
