Oxygen

Oxygen

A Poem by A. J. Kingsley
"

When people say they feel like they're drowning, sometimes they know exactly what they're saying.

"
When I was little I almost drowned.

Now, fully grown, I relive that feeling of floundering.

The breath leaving my lungs, the darkness covering my eyes.

Only this time it's not my fault.

I didn't jump into the water unknowingly.

It crept behind me and enveloped me slowly.

I didn't notice until it had already overtaken me.

But it doesn't just rip the air from my body.

It drags me deeper, and deeper.

All I can see are the shadows above the surface.

Looking down at me.

I want to scream for help but my mouth is flooded.

I struggle desperately to break free of my bonds.

To escape this watery tomb.

Return to the sky where I belong.
