The Great Divide

The Great Divide

A Story by Dr. Tim Williams
"

The divisions in the US stem as far back to before the Civil War

"
It could arguably said that the divisions in the United States today mirror much of the divisions that existed leading up to, during, and after the Civil War. When we look at the scope and magnitude in the amount of different factions today only to be driven further apart by the Trump Administration handling of affairs to Andrew Johnson's term as President you can see that the surrender of the South at Appomattox in 1865 hasn't really healed the great divides this nation still has.

Had Lincoln lived thru his second term there again it could arguably be said the United States today would look a lot better than it currently does. When we look back at the time of the Emancipation Proclamation white southerners were still hopeful their way of life would continue as it was before the Civil War. All though history books list the main reason why the Civil War was fought as an issue to free the Slaves too much of our own history remains purposely omitted to hide the real truth of what really happened leading up to, during and after the armistice was signed.

Questions continue to surface pertaining to assassination of Lincoln and the influence of international bankers had on certain members of Congress. Many believed and there is much evidence to support that with Lincoln out of the way and the ineptitude of President Andrew Johnson paved the way for Congress to pass the Reconstruction Act of 1867 and the Act of 1871. The Act of 1871 virtually gave card blanche to the international bankers. With the control of Congress in the hands of the money elite we the people became pawns in a power struggle that to this day has only deepened the great divides in our nation today.

This past mid-term election though did bring on some hope that things could change when the public mounted a counter offensive and created a voting block to elect candidates without ties to corporate interests. But, allot more has to be accomplished to eliminate the corruption that continues in our political process. The divisions between rich and poor and the racial ethnic divides continue to foster discord and a contentious harboring of resentment, animosity, and hatred that has been allowed to remain unchecked for far too long.

Whenever one rises above the fray and rallies the public against the tyranny of injustices that has spilled blood, sweat and tears of an anxious nation only to have those voices silenced by the violence and injustice they fought so hard to eliminate has happened all too often. Lincoln, John and Robert Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King all succumbed by the violent terror that still exists in our nation today.

When we look back to the Reconstruction period following the Civil War what was done in the name of Reconstruction only produced more of the racial divide that still exists. Even though the Reconstruction Act of 1867 tried to increase the number of now freed slaves to join the political process there remained much opposition to this new freedom for former slaves. During World War II the Japanese Americans found themselves targeted by a government who though they were a threat. More recently after 9-11 animosity fear, and open hostility against Muslims took it's tool on a nation and created more division that is still relevant in too many peoples minds today.

The great divides that exist today have all come from the lack of nurturing and fostering an educated public. When people everywhere remain tied to the yolk of oppression where individual freedoms don't exist the rule of tyranny always keeps them ignorant and humanities fear creates the divisions in societies. One thinks of the quote from FDR "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." is the catalyst for the sum of all fears. "It is then mankind continues to ignite the flames of distrust and anxiety which left unchecked the seeds of hate that have been planted by fear turns brother against brother. Until we understand that the seeds of hate have been planted by mans ignorance there can be no peace.

Today, the racial divides continues to remain unhealed. And until we have leaders who are courageous and of sound integrity. Leaders not in love with publicity but in love with justices. leaders not in love with money but in love with humanity. And, leaders who can rise to greatness by the great causes that need to be undertaken this nation will continue to flounder and the great divides will tear this nation apart.
