To a Girl

To a Girl

A Poem by Titus McGuire

I thought at first that you were perfection

That we were a match made in Heaven

That could withstand the test of time

But you knew all along it was a lie

You betrayed me and deceived me

You made me think it was alright to feel

To have emotions, to love

But all along it was just a game

A game, sadly to say, I could not win

I wasn’t supposed to win

I meant nothing to you

I never did

All your words didn’t mean a thing, either

They were as empty and hollow

As your heart appears to be

Does it make you happy to know you broke a heart

That you gave another hope

Only to destroy it

Could you not have kept your words to yourself

If they were not true

But rather hollow lies that bring pain in the end

If I meant nothing to you

How could you lead me to believe I had a chance

When all along you knew

You could never love me

Could you not have turned me away

Never spoken, never replied

Right from the start

For now all I receive is your silence

And it seems natural to you

But not when it mattered

Not when it could have saved my heart from being broken

If only for a moment you knew my pain

Then maybe you would understand

Maybe then you would be sympathetic

But, alas, I do not want your pity

I want you vanquished

From my mind and from my memory

Your words flushed out of my heart

I want to forget that you ever existed

That you were ever a part of my life

For to remember only brings pain and heartache

And I know you never spare a thought for me

So why do I find it so hard to let you go

I think this is a truly universal topic. Ironically I have had a very similar situation happen with a rationship.

How sad. I suppose it was meant to have the mood of such feelings.
I liked it, nonetheless.

Potent Master Titus, yes indeed.
How many times do memories we thought we had forsaken rise to trip us up in our moments of letting our guard down? The attempts of relenquishing a bitter love's hold on our hearts is a painful thing and I think you capture this implicitly in this work. Great work!~P
