To the Boy with the Baseball Cap Who Only Wants a Friend

To the Boy with the Baseball Cap Who Only Wants a Friend

A Poem by E. A. Lide

I think that Darkness is afraid of light, which is why

he always hides under your bed and your covers during the day.

And in the closet, where there are many soft clothes, and shadows,

which cloak him sufficiently enough, at least.

Sometimes, when you’re looking, you can find him tucked away under the couch

where the dust bunnies live, curled up next to an old dog bone;

until you grab a flashlight and lay down on your stomach, and smile at him

and shine your light on him so that you can see him better.

When you do that he scurries away to safety,

and you don’t get a chance to get a good long look at him.

And sometimes you sit around and wish that he would come out and play

because he always seems to be around somewhere but he won’t talk to you.

He doesn’t answer when you call because you’re always sitting on the sofa,

or at the table, and there’s usually a lamp nearby-

but you don’t realise that that’s why he cowers,

because if you did you would turn off the lamp and pull the drapes

and go to that shadowy corner in the sitting room

and wait for him to creep up to you.

Love your style of story telling.
Enjoyed reading this.
It makes me wonder...
- was he shy
- was he being playful (last line made me think this)
- was he afraid of being abused
- did he have a sensitivity to light
we'll never know, just as the story teller doesn't know, but we want to embrace him regardless

Umm.... Wow. That was good. I liked that. It was short. It was nice. It was just the tiniest bit creepy. Good job you.
