She Cries

She Cries

A Story by Bridgett

She walks away from the cluster of buildings, heavy hearted and misty-eyed.  Forcing her legs to work, she places one foot in front of the other, wanting to fall down, to curl up in a ball and bleed love.  The sting of the words still pierce through the tender flesh of her heart, leaving her exposed and so vulnerable.  She knows once the tears start, they won't stop, but she can't let him see her fall apart...over him.  Why is her car so far away?  The pain is building, how much longer can she hold it together?  Her car now comes into sight and at once her eyes burn.  She reaches the door, falls into the seat and slams the door, pushing the lock down.  Burying her face in her hands, she weeps.  Her hope and dream no longer a possibility.  Her chest heaves with each new thought and the tears leak through the cupped hands on her face.  Broken, so broken.  The sobs echo in the empty air.  Sobs no one will ever hear.  The pain of rejection washes over her.  All the years, the memories, the love... Squeezing her eyes tighter and scrunching her fingers in her hair, she cries.
