Some people love flying. It scares me and I think I’m starting to hate it already. I try not to think about it, or look at the patchwork appearance of fields and houses below. In my mind, I bring up images of happier times. Times when I would hold my wife close and feel her heart beating in sync with mine. Remembering the hopeful plans for our future gives a place for fear of flying to return and shatters the momentary bliss.

The wind burns my skin as it rushes past. I think of the World War 1 pilots who flew in open cockpits while dogfighting in the air. I recollect the testimonial of one of those pilots, about loving the sting of the wind and the free feeling of flying a bi-winged plane. I attempt to put myself in his place and pretend I’m in one of those dogfights. It lends me no joy for the reason I imagine the Bloody Red Barron coming up behind me with his machine guns blasting. It is now more difficult to shake the anxiety. With every passing moment, dread permeates my being.

I think of our children, a boy in first grade a girl in third grade. Their happy faces keep me company, for a while. We laugh, as we did on Christmas morning. Then my thoughts turn to our meager savings for their college fund. Will they be able to get a higher education without me working through the years? I can’t bear to think of them like that. I attempt to remember our wedding day; all I can conjure is a scene of her crying, because I’m not with her.

No, flying is no great joy for me in fact it terrifies me. You need to understand my situation. When the terrorist shot his gun in the airliner, the side of the plane burst open. I was blown out at thirty thousand feet. It seems like a long time ago. I’m afraid to look down to see the ground rushing to meet me. I can feel the air getting warmer. I can smell the aroma of the trees. My heart is racing.

I told my family I love them as I boarded the plane. I wish I had hugged them a little longer.

THE END

Dear Contestant,

I liked the message at the end but I do wish there was more dialogue, perhaps things they said to each other before he left. More of the thoughts of the main character in this short story, for it seemed it was more of a distraction the entire time but it would be cool if I could feel the terror as he falls, the sorrow of not being with his family more.

This is a great story about not wanting to fly. The imagery put me in the story. The ending is the cherry on top.

A interesting bit of flash-fiction, and no doubt horrifying. It grants credence to, 'embrace your love one's, for it may be the last'. It also makes use of the theory of 'a second is an eternity,' a myriad of thoughts and emotions as the ground grows ever closer.
