fetus.

A Poem by Dana Shefelbine

he was hot, burning.

a volcanic rock dispersing into the bowels of my hand.

impetuous creature,  a whimsical boy.

no bigger than a kitten; he was purple.

his spine buckled

the fetus crunched like a leaf in autumn.

through layers of depleted skin,

he was a part of me.
