Sunset Sails

Sunset Sails

A Poem by Traci

Snapped by a sound upon the wind,

I hear the ocean calling my name.

Even my own voice, my heartbeat,

cannot deny her presence.

The distant cries of the ancient seas,

forlorn whispers, ominous fears,

hear now this anecdote of mystery.

Tormented, tattered, torn,

a soul journeys through primeval scrolls,

the gentle breeze guides through tempest waters,

coursing frayed sails homeward

emerging into the light,

facing destiny, finding clarity,

feeling the hard hand of humanity,

on the beach, beside serenity

beneath the setting of the Santa Cruz sun.

I love the Monterey coastline. I spend three years roaming her in 1992-1994. I spend a lot of time in Santa Cruz. I liked your description of the sea. The sea can be heartless but if we respect her. She can be kind too. Thank you Traci for sharing the amazing poetry.

This was a very poignant write... i feel much the same way...the ocean has always been a metaphor that i use frequently in my poetry...
The beauty of your poem lies in the fact that you actually make the ocean seduce and call upon the reader... we feel that strange pull...:))

This is a very satisfying poem, feeling like the churning of water along the Santa Cruz Coast! It's dark and powerful but not unrelenting. The feeling is like waking up on a beach with a hangover...uncomfortable but not sorry.

The setting sun of Santa Cruz. As you read my work you may see pictures of things familiar to you.

Nice piece with a great feel of the challenge of the open sea. I am not a sailor, but always have enjoyed my time on the water and near the water. Especially the ocean. Well done.
