They were driving down the
curving, quarter mile driveway to his house. He had taken her to meet his mother and three of his of his sisters. A
stand of tall pine trees blocked the view of the house. He stopped
the car just inside the mouth of the driveway.
They sat, talking, getting to know each other better. The night was
dark, the moon and stars hidden by all the trees. When a car drove
by he asked, “Do you know what a badittle is?”
“No,” she said.
“It's a car with
one tail light out and a peadittle is a car with one front light out.
And that means...”
Gently, he turned
her head towards him and gave her a kiss. “That means I get to
kiss you.”
Never had she
received a kiss like that before, it was so sweet and tender. She
was only sixteen years old, a high school junior. He was nineteen
and in college. They had only gone on a couple of dates together.
Still she knew, that someday, she would marry this boy. And she did.
