The Prophet, the Doctor and the Deity

The Prophet, the Doctor and the Deity

A Poem by Wesley L Dingler

I met a man

Who said he was a prophet

"Prophet?" I returned

"Well, then, prophet of mine,

what can you offer me that will help out here?

As you can see, I am in need."

He only smiled and replied:

"I can't offer you anymore than you can offer yourself.

It just doesn't work like that."

(Life doesn't work like that)

"But perhaps, if you look inward yourself,

you will find everything you need."

I saw a doctor

I said: "Doctor, doctor--

Medicinal magician--

what drug can you offer me that will help out here?

As the chart shows, I am in need."

He only replied:

"There is no drug that can offer you anymore than you can offer yourself.

It just doesn't work like that."

(Life doesn't work like that)

"But perhaps, if you look inward yourself,

you will find everything you need."

I spoke with God

I said: "King of Kings--

Governor of everything--

what can You offer me that will help out here?

As You well know, I am in need."

He only replied:

"I can't help you my child, as you are unwilling to help yourself.

It just doesn't work like that."

(Life doesn't work like that)

"But perhaps, if you look inward yourself,

you will find everything you need."
