Character

Character

A Poem by Lainey

I claw at the man-made walls of my prison,
My soul searching for a form of release...but finding none.
I see the world through windows of the soul that aren't mine.

I am a puppet.
I am pulled and pushed in the directions that I am told
With no choice of my own, I am helpless to resist.

The call of the author is too strong.
It burdens my very being with a sense to find where my story leads,
Whether I like it or not.

I am a captive to the mind of the one that made me.
I am a player in a game that I do not understand.
It moves and changes day after day, word after word.

I am afraid.
What is in store for me?
No one thinks about my opinion.

I am a character tossed around for interpretation in the seas of imagination.
I live my life from page to page, sentence to sentence.
I am given strength from the thing that I despise.

I have no freedom other than to dance in the language.
I twirl among the letters and dash among the lines.
I am always afraid of the end of my sentence.

How long can I be given life?
It is only a matter of time before my story is finished.
If only I-
