Life's Cup

Midnight shadows cover o'er my soul,
Yet hide me not from trials’ toll.
Tears stinging now my weary eyes
Blur reasons for truth’s disguise.

I embrace now words of scholars astute--
Thoughts and plans not to refute;
Predicted trials would fill life's cup,
Vile gall weary soul might long sup.

Understood I tempest of sorrows,
Would render me hope for 'morrows.
Longest of roads might meet dead end,
Finding for me a treasured friend.

Review now I moments of days passed
Knowing times ticked by far too fast
I place now tears in furrowed hand
Ever drudging towards Glory Land.

Well Sheila you know me I don't worry bout meters, i am more into the words and the feelings expressed and I must say again you show such great faith in the face of adversity... your words ring of true inspiration... and the ending really was divine... knowing that all your pain is washed away by God's grace.

Thanks Jacob! Life can be so complicated - it is good to stop and think about it and that which we .. read more
Incredibly wise, hopeful and inspiring.
Your true humility is quite discernible, here, good Sheila.
Work to admire!

I enjoyed this poem as the verses spoke of a life reflected upon. The form and meter were fine choices as well as the classic style. It took me into my past with some of the same feelings. Thank you.

This a beautifully crafted poem, Sheila .. and one that's completely appropriate for the new year. You never fail to bring pleasure or thought or both to your friends and reviewers.

Being honest with you, I enjoy whatever you write .. sometimes an individual's spirit shines brighter when his or her idiosyncracies show. Whatever you write, however you write, just never stop.

It seems many of us do some soul searching around New Years. This is very well penned and flows well as thoughts stream from past, to present, to hope for the final outcome. You have always been a very talented writer and the attention to meter you are developing makes your gift shine even brighter, my friend. Sorry to be so long reviewing this but my read requests have only just started showing up in the last hour or so.

Oh cuz...You never seize to amaze me...I see you paid attention to "proper meter", but regardless...your brilliant ability is present and delivering another brilliant work of art. I always love how you are able to switch up your style and still write wonderful peices...and the reader can always tell the indentity of the writer, without looking at a picture, but merely by the content of their art. You are truly in a league of your own...and I truly love this peice!.

Dear Sheila,

An interesting and unusual meter: 9-8-8-8. I think this meter helps set the mood since the 9 syllable beginning line gives a sense of tension to the openning each stanza. And the mood is wonderful. Clarity of thought could be improved a bit, but boy this is already such a wonderful poem. You've created a wonderful tension with your words. Starting with a description of your current state, one in which you are still stuck in pain without answers. And in stanza two you recognize that perhaps there were warnings and cautions against the path chosen. In stanza three you recognize and understand where you are and that you might still arrive in a place of comfort even if the road is long. And then stanza four gives the final reflection. You recognized that perhaps enough care has not been taken with your life and this causes tears. Yet still there is hope as you wearily travel on to final and last rewards.

You are becoming quite the poet with these well thought out and carefully crafted pieces. I like it. I like it a lot.

My very best regards and I look forward to continued profound pieces from you in the New Year.
