Playthings

Playthings

A Poem by Willard Wells
"

Who's Running Your Game

"

The demons never win in the dark

They are my playthings which I use in the dark

I am not theirs because I control my dark

Playing Dodge Ball in Dark hallways of my mind

They are my playthings which I use in the dark

They battle hard yet always lose

Sitting on the edge of the blade of life

They are my playthings which I use in the dark

And always one foot in the light

Sitting between darkness and light

So I stay grounded in life.

But always keep in sight the light

NEVER LOSE SIGHT OF THE LIGHT

Author's Note

Willard Wells
In review I often mention the demons in the hallways and today as I wrote it in a review I realized I may need to work that thought into something. And this is what has happened so far. This started to be a Senryu, but it got out of control.

This is the best constructed poem that I personally have seen from you so far. You had complete control of your topic throughout and the poem ended as empowering as when it began.
Now, I am not into demons and the dark-side and such but, I do not have to be, I was in your capable hands throughout the poem.
Big time piece of writing.

Very relatable piece! I think we've all got demons on a leash in our minds that break free every so often.
Nice work.

That's very sad, but true.
Repetition of dark and darkness keeps us every weary of the presence of our demons and by keeping a foot in the light we are able to stay focused in our pursuits to destroy those demons. Well-penned.

It's time I got around to it, Willard... I've been meaning to for a while!
Amazing use of words and thoughts. I like the statements leading to the very good ending. We must keep on eyes on the light of hope or falter. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

Your structure is so unique in this poem. It kind of reminds me of an old (late 90's) rap song I heard that always ended in "ha!" The first time I heard it on the radio I was thinking, "Why is the artist repeating that word at the end of every line?" But at the same time I found the song to be unique not for what it was about to be honest, because like most rap music, this song is derogatory. But I found it to be unique because of the style of rhyming the artist used. His uniqueness was his claim to fame, and then mainstream killed his career. You just gave me something new to try in my writing in the future.
