A Moment

A Moment

A Poem by Yael Asofsky

Humanity will never understand
the complexity behind a single
moment.
In every inhalation the world continues to revolve
regardless of the matter,
the matter in which we
try to wrap our
minds around
something so eternally greater
than us
in hopes.
In hopes
of what?
Of a purpose
of justification
of redemption
of salvation?
Each unfathomable second
carries millions of different outcomes,
each of which define us.
But what is definition?
Is it validation and security?
Is it limitation and restriction?
Is it slavery or is it liberation?
These chains are binding,
yes,
but we are already bound
to this Earth
to our minds
to our definitions?
Liberation is nothing
but a feeling of confusion
and a loss
of any direction
human nature
had attempted to
provide us with.
Liberation is a contradiction.
It may free your soul,
but it will never truly
free your own mind.
A mind.
The most incredible thing in the universe,
yet every man possesses it.
You see, possession nourishes our mind.
We find safekeeping in having
control over ourselves
and others
and the facetious illusion we can control
our pasts and our future.

God bless us all.
