Autumnal Blues

Autumnal Blues

A Poem by Paul Pruett

The warmth of the day lingers on.

But it struggles.

The sun’s rays are long in the waning afternoon.

They still have their heat but the strength is gone.

Gone, gone, gone.

Gone as the leaves turn.

Gone as the lawns are cut for that one last time.

Gone as the gourds are brought in from the harvest.

The warmth lingers on.

Echoing what was.

Promising what is to come, but long off.

Long after the ice has broken on the mill pond.

Long after the lilies have returned to bloom again.

The days shorten  now.

As the warmth lingers on.

But less and less.

Dark clouds hover over the mountains, threatening snow.

As they close in, the warmth lingers less.

And less.

And the leaves fall in the cooling breeze.

As the warmth lingers on.

But less and less.

Dark clouds hover over the mountains, threatening snow.

As they close in, the warmth lingers less.

And less.

And the leaves fall in the cooling breeze.
