After Dark - Chapter Forty-Three

A Chapter by lawrence bear

The moon was bright, giving light to the forest, shadows loomed and the wolves howled. Gregory held her close, “I’m so sorry my love,” he blubbered looking to the heavens. “God help us, help me…”

“God cannot help you!” a man’s voice had said.

Gregory was dumbfounded and he looked down to where it came from, and he was aghast to see Mary-Anne looking up at him. “You are all doomed!” She said in a voice that was not hers and she gave an awful cackle, he pushed her aside and scrambled to his feet. He watched in horror as she rose, her bones snapped and cracked as she seem to twist rising from the earth.

“Gregory!” It was Mary-Anne’s voice, “Help me!” and she held out her hand, he took one step and was about to reach for her and then her body twisted, “What have you done to me? What have you done to me?” her voice sounded hideous and her body twisted some more and it cracked and popped and then she let out a horrible scream.

She transformed into a beast, all Gregory could do, was watch as she changed, her cries were painful and screams that was not hers filled the air, soon she stood before him as the creature. She rumbled and her eyes bore into him and then gave a loud roar.

“Mary-Anne,” he trembled.

The monster hunched over and growled and it took one step forward then pausing, readying for the kill. Saliva dripped from its mouth as its fangs bore fresh new razor teeth. Gregory’s heart raced and tears rolled down his cheeks.

“I love you!” Gregory spluttered.

The beast snarled and leapt forward with a roar.
