Anguish

Gregory had a sickening feeling; he broke out into cold sweat.

“Please don’t let me hear what I think I will hear! No, please no, plea--se!” he pleaded and then he heard it.

A women’s cry rebounded across the valley that sent shock waves through him. He bent down and picked up his rifle and ran down the hillside, he tumbled down a ways from exhaustion, and he pushed himself up off the dirt. He tried to get up, tears began to swell his eyes and he shook his head no, “Not her d****t,” he fought to get up and then another gut wrenching cry for help stopped him.

He slumped to his hands and knees, he then rolled on his back, “No!” he cried, his hands covered his face, he wanted to cry but anger fueled him and he then rolled over and fought to get to his feet, his sides ached but he took a few steps before the pain struck him again that sent him to one knee, his head buried as he coiled in pain.

He held his side “No! Not my Mary!” his voice sank.

The wail from the monster boomed.

Gregory’s head lifted.

His face was bloody; rage was in his eyes as they peered into the fog.

He then pulled himself up and stumbled a few steps, with his rifle slung around his shoulder, he slogged forward. Through the thick foliage and fog he struggled to maintain his balance, he held onto branches to stay upright fighting exhaustion. His heart pounded his chest walls and his vision began to blur, he didn’t want to give up, he closed his eyes and rested his head on a tree. All he could think of was Mary-Anne, his dream, the nightmare, the vision. He clenched his teeth and let out a cry of anger and frustration. Yet he pulled himself through the brush, he felt anguish, he felt beaten but he needed to know, even though in his heart he already knew. He was too late… too late to fight off the monster and too late, to save her.
