After Dark - Chapter Thirty-One

A Chapter by lawrence bear

Anxiety pulled at him...

As Gregory approached a clearing surrounded by bush, he stopped halfway and dismounted his horse; he pulled out his gun and studied the area around him before slowly continuing forward on foot. Anxiety pulled at him the closer he went; his heart beat a little faster as he heard a rustling sound followed by animal grunting and growling. He slowly drew his rifle quietly and cautiously. The snarling grew louder the closer he went; his heart seemed to be in his throat as he rounded the bush and his heart drummed louder in his head, Rudy’s stallion lay lifting up and down. It appeared as if she were trying to rise up but the grumbling and growling was that of something else, something large eating and tugging away at it.

Fear consumed him as he felt his knees about to buckle; he stood dumb founded and nauseous as the beast burrowed its head into the steed pushing away at its dead body. He was shocked and he froze as he watched and stood gaping at its backside. The beast was huge and its fur was brown, blacked with blood from the horse it ripped away at its insides. His heart raced and he shook as he took aim,

He was so much in panic, he forgot to load his rifle, but the animal didn’t seem to hear until he fumbled with his cartridge and his gun. The beast looked up. He was aghast as they both locked eyes, and the same time he took a big gulp of air, he felt a warm stream run down his leg as the angry Grizzly roared and stood up on its hind legs. It wasn’t the beast he was hoping for, but a new terror.
