Impasse

Impasse

Assuming conclusions,
overruling consumptions

dynamited love,
transforming the dynamics
of our relationship,
nullifying every chance we had
of reaching a safe harbor.

Somewhere
in the middle of arguments,
words were washed ashore,
and we found ourselves
gazing at each other …

from the opposite ends
of our defined spectrums.

In this is seems two people of similar hot temperament have ended up on a desert shore because they clash violently in words and deeds. The first stanza made me think (a good thing) and I am still unsure about its meaning and in particular the second line.

This is one of the best heartbreak poems I've read in a long while. Your writing here has many similarities to the way Jacob writes about heartbreak, full of strong metaphors & with a withering resigned tone that gives a sense of irony. "Assuming" is an opening slap, since assumptions kill relationships. I love how you make it sound like this situation might've had promise, but the narrator believes most relationships will hit the rocks eventually! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

a separation of souls is never a pleasant thing and the way you painted it so succinctly is very nicely penned I do like the spectrum analogy here very clever. I have been in relationship where we rarely agreed and were able to be fine with this but over time with this are hearts lost connection.

I guess sometimes tensions build up without talking and soon it becomes a sort of cold war just building up our ammo. Couples often take love as a battlefield trying to consume the other... Perhaps they might need to talk and sort out their differences and disarm their nuclear weapons. I like this yumna... A lot

i have had relationships like this...harsh words cannot be taken back...once they are hurled, they land, they sting, they penetrate the skin and heart...and sooner or later, we part.

As does and always will happen. I often hear that old saying - opposites attract. But often times those opposites wind up on the opposite side of the room. No river is completely smooth all the way I guess.
