Beat the Devil

Beat the Devil

A Poem by Z.Silas

Beat the Devil

I get on the road to successes
I grab my car keys and bulletproof vest
adjust my mirrors and confess
if I start this engine I'll never find rest
I kiss my gun's cold steel
put my hands on the wheel
no pain or sorrow to feel
I brace myself for the slow kill
living by the devil's code
I'm running down the devil's road
and I can't beat the son of a b***h
he left my father dead in a ditch
he took my lover's soul to make her rich
and I'll never forgive that witch
so I'm coming home on a white Mustang
and all hell follows behind
this is what the lord can find
me soaking in the blood of mankind
so I grip the throttle
and take one last swig of the bottle
this damnation path paved in tar and ash
the scars of my past
only the terror will last

Damn man, you sound more like that comic book character, The Punisher, with the sharp and revengeful tone of your voice. If I were the Devil, I'd be in hiding right now from your incoming wrath. The imagery feels apocalyptic, and it's quite refreshing the way you display it.

These words whip past at the speed I imagine your ride to be traveling. So much meaning behind every word increases the speed. At the end of this mighty swoosh of history and motive and immediacy comes to this screeching halt. This reader feels a gasp, what's next? is it worse? is it over?
