headlights

A Poem by ZmH
"

a poem based upon my nightmares following a car accident

"
its dark
why wont someone turn on the lights
my palms are sweaty
and this isnt my kind of ride
taillights red on the pavement
the light says stop
but you see go
lights over my shoulder
fireworks of glass
illuminated by the deafening sound of metal crunching
like nails on a chalkboard
your lights are all i see
will you be the death of me?

Such a striking poem that brought back memories to me when I got in my first car accident with my boyfriend back in January. It wasn't anything serious (we happened to get backed into by a milk truck on a main road), but I remember having such high anxiety after that & having trouble sleeping. It's like every time I would close my eyes, the whole scene would just replay over & over and wouldn't stop until I opened them. Some scary stuff, but I understand how it can be so traumatizing to someone...anyway, beautiful write & the imagery really made it come to life, like a flashback. Very powerful.
