Voice Development part 1

Voice Development part 1

A Lesson by Camille Corbett
"

It's time to get down to business!

"

In order to understand what we are trying to accomplish in this little segment, let's define what the hell "voice" is!

Voice:
1.The author's style, the quality that makes his or her writing unique, and which conveys the author's attitude, personality, and character.

2.Voice is the characteristic speech and thought patterns of a first person narrator; a persona. Because voice has so much to do with the reader's experience of a work of literature, it is one of the most important elements of a piece of writing.

Okay for lesson one, I want you to define in your own words, what you think voice is and write a paragraph that you think best exhibits your voice. Leave it as a comment or message it to me. I will tell you whether you are on the right track or not. So for now, chao dearies!

If strong verbs and nouns are the heart of a writing (And I say they are), than voice is the blood. Without voice and tone, you are nothing, and that's never good.

Voice is a writer's own "mark" on his/her writing style. If you read all of an author's work, you will notice the same pattern in the dialogue, paragraph expression and even in the storyline. I think it is what makes the writer's work theirs; the form and structure of his/her writing.

The voice is the unspoken heart of a writer. It does not need to be on a page. It is a belief, an idea, a style. It is the energy from which our own words are created.

"Voice" is a door to my mind, an opening to my soul. The ability to let someone know me without directly telling them. It is my past mixing with my present. Showing both my experiences and thoughts. Which if I try to restrict will destroy any balance in my writing as it hazes my thoughts.

Voice is the speech and thoughts.
Most of the time my voice is unheard over the television, or my baby screaming in the background.
My thoughts are often interupted and stray to something of more interest.
Though, this is the price to pay to be me.
I am just a ghost trying to tell a tale.

Voice is the imprint of my own unique personality in my writing. It was that sets my style apart from other writers and what attracts readers to my work. It is intangible in that it cannot be separated from the work, because the work itself is wholly grounded in it.

Voice is me talking or writing to my family, friends, or readers. Me in the way I express myself telling my stories or writing my poetry or describing my characters.

like myself my voice is adaptable. When i'm on the narrative track i can be (a. overhead:Sharing the personal reflections of the character in high speech)or (b. in the mix: I get very down home with my dialog and some of the actions my characters will do).
My voice in writing is a glimpse into the mechanics of my mind.

Voice is a sound that every writer possess in themselves, only it is different in every writer.
My voice is what I am and what I want to be. It is my own song that only I can understand better than anyone else can.
