What is "I" ?

What is the foundation for the existence of the self, the "I", etc. I just finished reading some Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Descartes, and Hume and examined their arguments for an upcoming course on Kierkegaard. What are your ideas on the concept of self-consciousness. Does the thing which senses become insignificant and irrationally moot as we strip away the physical world as Hume would argue, or is the only true thing which we can be sure of is its existence as Descartes would argue?

Some thought that they were the only one on the planet, and others were made to test and interact with them. Its the craziest opinion on the concept of "I" I ever came on.
