Can one be "too explicit"?

I think that my more erotic pieces are perceived by some to be a bit too "dirty," i.e., sexually explicit. What do you think? Should one veil erotic acts poetically, or is it okay to just say things as they really are, in all their specific glory? I think that sex is a beautiful act, and therefore one can never be too explicit when describing it-- lewdness is a different story. I think some people get frankness and lewdness mixed up, though. Lewdness, to me, is disrespecting sex with humor and gross-out comments.

Too excplicit?  Hmm..I'm pretty explicit in my writing.  I stay away from the really "taboo" stuff..ie...anything involving rape, child molestation etc.....Which I believe is pretty much the norm with most Erotica writers I read anyway.  I think erotica is supposed to be blunt, direct and primarily imaginative.  It is basically sexual fantasy from my point of few, and in my fantasies I can be pretty explicit!  :)

I abhor censorship in any form, but I do think that there are a few defining characteristics of erotica that make it what it is instead of flat-out pornography.  Don't get me wrong; I have no issues with porn.  I just think that "poetic veiling" (excellent word choice btw) is what keeps a story in the realm of erotica.  Having said that, if an erotic story is written well enough (i.e., rich characterization and plot) then perhaps taking explicit liberties with any sex acts in the story won't diminish the story itself to mere pornography.

I don't think someone can be...'too explicit'. I think that things that are like rape or child molestion are over the line, but not to explicit.

My comment isn't really helping, because I'm way tired. :) Sorryz.
