Im often told that my writing is too depressing...is this true? and if so is it a bad thing?

There is nothing wrong with it. It can be reflective of your headspace or simply what you enjoy writing. When I was highschool, all my writing was very depressing but simply led to more balanced poetry later on in my life. So write what  you want to write

Honestly, I think that's fine. I mean, I like to build up feelings for a character then kill it off giving the protagonist motivation to end the antagonist's life.
Also, The protagonist can be evil, that's kind of fun to do, gives you a different perspective of the story.
