Does every story require a villain?

I'm thinking about the "man vs. society," "man vs. nature" kind of story. Does such a story need an antagonist? Or can circumstance beat down our hero? How do you even create a single character that represents society, that personifies nature?
Thoughts, please.

No, I do not believe every story requires a villain.  In a "Man vs Society" story, you may have a figure head leading a society or political party.  But the real struggle for the MC is his/her battle to go against what everyone else is going along with.  In a Man vs Nature story, the antagonist could simply be survival against weather or animals.
