I agree! This is one of the best things about writing. You make your own rules. However if your rules differ from the norm, the reader will need some level of explanation.

My favourite thing about writing PR is that like you've said, you can change the rules. I love to add in my own twist to famous mythology, and that's the most satisfying writing.
