Make a list of stories that you most admire; whether contemporary authors or otherwise that you respect and would like to ‘write like.’ Think about the similarities of these author’s, what draws you to them? What is it about the ‘voice’ of the writers that most affects you?

Now make a list of author’s you dislike. Contrast this list with the first list (above). How are they different and less appealing to you? This will help you identify the writing ‘voices’ you most want to avoid.
