Are You Where You Belong?

Are You Where You Belong?

A Poem by 8petallotus

He broke her heart.
He broke it in a million pieces,
A million ways,
Before he said the words.

She was always perfect,
Always what he wished he could be;
But never good enough to work for.

He made up excuses
And played on petty things,
Seeking out reasons
They weren't meant to be.

He broke her heart by telling her he would never leave
And finding ways to ignore her.
He broke her heart playing on those fragile strings
A melody of anxiety,
Blaming her for the break downs.

He broke her heart by misunderstanding
What it means to be a partner,
Or rather pretending,
And let her suffer her greatest losses alone.
While he sat on the phone,
With women he wished she was in that moment.

He broke her heart by admitting who he was
And reveling in the darkness
Instead of the light.
Finding self analazation fueled justifications
For why he wouldn't do better.

He broke her heart viewing commitment as an evil thing
But leading her to believe
It was all he wanted,
Eventually.
Continously going on, and on
About the fact she was still the one;
But betting on the loosing side,
Filling himself with deeper lies,
Protecting a narrative in his head.
For it was better than the dread,
Of vulnerability.

He broke her heart.
Long before he said the words;
Because actions are contractions felt deep.
And he, he
Wasn't who he wanted to be,
So he decided so easily,
It wasn't worth risking it all
On such a worthless thing
Like love that wouldn't fall.
