THE CEDAR CHEST

THE CEDAR CHEST

A Poem by DONALD EISSLER
"

MEMORIES IN A CEDAR CHEST

"

Memories now stored away
Neatly in a cedar chest
Pictures once bright and clear
Now is where they rest
...

Every day about this time
He goes and fingers through
Memories that have been left
There he leaves a tear or two

He picks up a photograph
Pretty lady dressed in white
Smiles come across his face
Remembering their wedding night

Holds it close to his chest
Swears a heatbeat he can feel
Though it’s just a photograph
Damn it seems so real

The words of I miss you
Now come from trembling lips
Tears running down his cheeks
As the picture he tightly grips

Eyes overwhelmed with tears
So much he can hardly see
Memiors now so vivid
Of the love she gave to thee

Picture stained with his tears
From everyday that he was here
Always kiss's her goodbye
Like he did in by gone years

Places back the picture
Neatly in the chest
The lid he slowly closes
Till tomorrow there she'll rest

When it comes the morning time
He'll visit once again
Will share kiss's and I love you
Like they did once way back when

This was very beautiful. There is nothing like revisiting old memories that are tucked away. I have a file box that holds all the letters my husband wrote to me in high school over twenty years ago. I take them out and read them wondering where the time has gone. I also have other things from the past as well that are bittersweet. This is a wonderful poem. I enjoyed it's read.

This very nearly brought tears to my eyes, it is a kind of numb poem, one of slight resignation to the fate which has come to pass, yet through this numbness and resignation he refuses to completely surrender himself to despair, for he can still go visit that cedar chest, he can still share with her memory what he shared with the real woman who once lived and breathed beside him.
Beautiful.
